🔎Are you missing gifted students hiding in plain sight? Share these subtle indicators with your gen ed colleagues to boost your talent scout or child find identification process.
As gifted educators, we're always on the lookout for exceptional students who need specialized support. But sometimes, giftedness doesn't present itself in obvious ways. By remembering, and sharing, these five often-overlooked signs of giftedness that can help you refine your Child Find process and ensure no gifted student slips through the cracks.
1. Unusual Sense of Humor 😂
Have you ever accidentally let a sarcastic comment out and only one student giggles? Gifted students often display a sophisticated or quirky sense of humor that may seem beyond their years. They might appreciate wordplay, puns, or abstract jokes that their peers don't quite grasp. Keep an ear out for students who consistently make witty observations or clever remarks.
2. Intense Focus on Specific Interests 🦖🚀
While many children have hobbies, gifted students often exhibit an unusually deep focus on particular subjects. This might manifest as extensive knowledge about dinosaurs, space, or historical events that goes far beyond typical age expectations. Look for students who can engage in detailed discussions about their interests at a level that surprises you.
3. Heightened Emotional Sensitivity 🩷
Gifted students often experience emotions more intensely than their peers. They might show extreme empathy, become deeply upset by world events, or display strong reactions to perceived injustices. While this sensitivity can sometimes be mistaken for behavioral issues, it's often a sign of advanced emotional development.
4. Asking Unusual or Complex Questions🤔
Many gifted students have a knack for asking questions that make you pause. These aren't just the typical "why" questions of childhood curiosity, but complex inquiries that demonstrate advanced reasoning skills. Pay attention to students who consistently ask thought-provoking questions or make unexpected connections between ideas.
5. Connection with Older PeersÂ
Gifted students often feel more comfortable interacting with older children or adults. They might seek out conversations with teachers during recess or gravitate towards older students during group activities.
There are so many different clues, but these five can get you started. You can also use my digital Grade-Level Classroom Screener for Gifted Characteristics. It is based on the TN Dept of Ed suggested screener, but in digital format. Â
By expanding your Child Find toolkit to include these often-overlooked signs, you can create a more comprehensive identification process. Sometimes, it's hiding in the student who makes you laugh with an unexpectedly sophisticated joke or challenges your thinking with a profound question.
